A Brief History of Gedikpasa Hammam
Gedikpasa Hammam was built in 1475 by the grand vizier Gedik Ahmed Pasha, to the design of the architect Mimar Hayrettin — only about two decades after the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul, which makes it one of the oldest hammams still in use in the city. If you are looking for a truly authentic and historical Turkish bath experience in Istanbul, look no further than Gedikpaşa Hamamı. Dating back over 550 years, stepping inside this magnificent structure is like walking into another era. The beautiful domed ceilings and warm marble interiors create an instantly serene and peaceful atmosphere, offering a perfect escape from the city’s hustle.The staff were friendly, professional, and very welcoming, especially for first-time visitors. They provide clear directions and everything you need (towels, slippers, etc.).The Hamam Ritual itself was sheer bliss. After relaxing on the hot marble göbek taşı (navel stone), the invigorating full-body kese scrub removed years of dead skin, leaving me feeling incredibly fresh and clean. This was followed by the wonderfully relaxing foamy bubble wash and massage, which was pure luxury.I highly recommend upgrading to the full body massage—it was the perfect conclusion. Afterwards, the relaxing treat of Turkish tea and Turkish delight was the cherry on top. This is an essential cultural experience in Istanbul and one I would 10/10 recommend!
