A Brief History of Gedikpasa Hammam
Gedikpasa Hammam was built in 1475 by the grand vizier Gedik Ahmed Pasha, to the design of the architect Mimar Hayrettin — only about two decades after the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul, which makes it one of the oldest hammams still in use in the city. Visited Gedikpasa Hamam today and I have to say it’s one of the best experiences we have ever had. After being greeted by the brilliant Guvenc we were introduced to our therapists Cemil & Ataberk, both of who were absolutely amazing. After being warmed, sweated, scrubbed, soaped and massaged to a boneless, relaxed blob. Then off for an oil massage, there’s not a single tight muscle left in our bodies!We then had turkish tea & treats while chatting with Guvenc, Cemil & Ataberk. We can’t recommend this highly enough, far cheaper than the tourist hammams we were recommend by guide books & the hotel. We may try & squeeze another one in before we leave!
