What to Wear to a Turkish Bath (Hammam) in Istanbul

What to wear to a Turkish bath in Istanbul: the pestemal, swimwear rules, and what is provided in the men's and women's sections.

What should you wear to a Turkish bath? Very little. In an Istanbul hammam you wear a pestemal — a thin cotton wrap the venue provides — and underneath you can go nude, in underwear, or in a swimsuit. Towels and slippers are included, so there is almost nothing you need to pack.

What to wear to a Turkish bath in Istanbul

The short answer is: whatever makes you comfortable under your pestemal. There is no dress code beyond the wrap itself, and what you wear beneath it is entirely your choice. Below is exactly what the hammam gives you, what to bring, and how much (or how little) to wear.

What the hammam provides

You do not need to bring bathing gear. A traditional hammam supplies the essentials, typically including:

  • A pestemal — the thin, quick-drying cotton wrap you change into on arrival.
  • Towels for drying off afterward.
  • Slippers or wooden sandals for the wet marble floors.
  • A private changing cabin or locker for your clothes.
  • Soap and the kese mitt used for your scrub.

Some packages also include extras such as shampoo, a robe, or a facial. If you are unsure what is included, each hammam’s booking page lists it clearly.

Underwear, swimsuit, or nothing at all?

This is the question first-timers ask most, and the answer is simple: your choice. You keep the pestemal on throughout, so you are always covered in the communal areas. What you wear beneath it is entirely up to your comfort level.

What men usually wear

Men typically keep their underwear on or wear swim trunks under the pestemal. Going nude beneath the wrap is also common and perfectly accepted. Sections are men-only or scheduled at men-only hours, and your attendant (the tellak) will be male.

What women usually wear

Women commonly wear bikini bottoms, a full swimsuit, or underwear beneath the pestemal, though some prefer to go without. Women are served in women-only sections or hours by a female attendant (the natir). If you would like more privacy, many hammams offer private rooms.

What to bring with you

  • Swimwear or spare underwear, if you would rather not go nude — some hammams also rent swimwear.
  • A hairbrush and any toiletries you want for afterward.
  • A change of dry underwear for the trip home.
  • A water bottle to rehydrate.
  • A little cash for an optional tip (around 10 to 15 percent) to thank your attendant.

You can leave the heavy packing at home — the hammam handles the rest.

Valuables and lockers

You are given a lockable changing cabin or a locker for your clothes, phone, and valuables, and you keep the key with you. Even so, it is wise to leave expensive jewelry and large amounts of cash at your hotel. Do not wear watches, rings, or delicate necklaces into the bath — the heat, water, and scrub are not kind to them, and it is one less thing to worry about.

What to wear and do after your bath

After your rinse and rest, you dry off with the towels provided and change back into your own clothes. Because your pores are open and your body is warm, loose, comfortable clothing feels best, and it is smart to let your hair dry a little before heading out into cold weather. Drink plenty of water, take it slow, and enjoy the deeply clean, relaxed feeling — it is part of the experience.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring my own towel to a Turkish bath?

No. Towels, a pestemal, and slippers are all provided. You only need to bring swimwear or underwear if you prefer to wear something under the pestemal, plus anything you want for after your bath.

Can I wear a swimsuit in a Turkish bath?

Yes. Many visitors wear a swimsuit or bikini under the pestemal, and it is a great option if you would feel more comfortable covered. Some hammams even rent swimwear if you forget yours.

What do you wear under the pestemal?

Underwear, a swimsuit, or nothing — it is entirely up to you. You stay wrapped in the pestemal throughout, and men’s and women’s areas are separate, so wear whatever puts you at ease.
