What to Expect at a Turkish Bath in Istanbul (First-Timer’s Guide)

First time at a Turkish bath in Istanbul? What actually happens, from the hot marble slab to the kese scrub and foam massage.

Wondering what happens in a Turkish bath? You warm up in a hot marble room, an attendant scrubs you with an exfoliating kese mitt, gives you a foam (bubble) massage, and then you rinse and rest. A traditional ritual in an Istanbul hammam takes about 45 to 90 minutes and leaves you deeply clean and relaxed.

What happens in a Turkish bath, step by step

The Turkish bath (hammam) ritual has followed the same rhythm for centuries. Here is exactly what to expect from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

1. Arrival, changing, and your pestemal

When you check in, you are shown to a private changing cabin. You undress and wrap yourself in a pestemal, a thin cotton cloth that everyone wears, and slip on the sandals provided. Your clothes and valuables go in a locked cabin or locker, and staff point you toward the main bath chamber.

2. Warming up on the gobektasi

At the heart of the hammam is the gobektasi, a large heated marble platform beneath a domed ceiling. You lie or sit here for 10 to 15 minutes while the warmth and steam open your pores and loosen your muscles. There is no rush at all — this part is about slowing down and letting your body adjust to the heat.

3. The kese scrub (exfoliation)

Next, an attendant — called a tellak for men or a natir for women — scrubs you from head to toe with a coarse mitt called a kese. This lifts away dead skin and leaves you noticeably smoother. It can feel vigorous, and seeing the dead skin roll off surprises almost every first-timer. That is completely normal and a sign it is working.

4. The foam (bubble) massage

After the scrub comes the signature foam massage. The attendant works up a cloud of warm, soapy bubbles, usually from a cloth bag, covers you in it, and massages your back, shoulders, arms, and legs. It is soothing rather than deep-tissue, and it is the moment most people remember most fondly.

5. Rinse, cool down, and tea

Finally, you are rinsed with warm water, often poured from a traditional metal bowl, and you can wash your hair. You then move to a cooler area to rest, rehydrate, and let your body temperature settle. Many hammams serve tea, water, or sherbet, so take your time before getting dressed.

How long does a Turkish bath take?

A standard Turkish bath session lasts about 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the package you choose. A basic self-service visit is shorter, while packages that add an oil massage, a longer foam massage, or a facial run toward the longer end. It is worth allowing extra time to rest afterward rather than rushing straight back out to sightsee.

Men and women: how the bath is arranged

Modesty is respected throughout. Most historic hammams have either separate sections for men and women or separate hours for each, and attendants are the same gender as the guests they serve. Some hammams also offer private rooms or couples’ packages if you would rather not share the communal chamber. You keep your pestemal on the whole time, so you are never fully exposed. Families are welcome too, and on this site children aged 3 to 12 pay half price.

Turkish bath etiquette for first-timers

  • Keep your pestemal on — it stays on throughout the ritual.
  • Move at a relaxed pace; there is no need to hurry between rooms.
  • Tell your attendant if the scrub feels too hard or the room too hot — they will happily adjust.
  • Speak quietly. The hammam is a calm, almost meditative space.
  • Hydrate well before and after, as the heat is dehydrating.

How much should you tip at a Turkish bath?

Tipping is customary but not mandatory. A tip of around 10 to 15 percent of the price, given to your attendant at the end, is a normal way to thank them for the scrub and massage. If several staff looked after you, you can leave a little more to be shared. Never feel pressured — a tip should simply reflect the service you received.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Turkish bath hurt?

No. The kese scrub is firm and the foam massage is relaxing rather than painful. If anything feels too rough, just ask your attendant to ease off — they are used to first-timers and will adjust.

Can I go to a Turkish bath if I am shy about nudity?

Yes. You wear a pestemal the entire time, sections are separated by gender, and private rooms are available at many hammams. Most people feel comfortable within a few minutes.

Should I eat before a Turkish bath?

Avoid a heavy meal right beforehand, as the heat can feel uncomfortable on a full stomach. A light snack and plenty of water is ideal — save the big meal for afterward.

Ready to try it for yourself?

First-timers often start with the welcoming, great-value Sifa Hammam, while the historic Cagaloglu Hammam is the most famous choice in the Old City. You can compare every option and book online, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before your visit, on our Turkish bath booking hub.
