A Brief History of Hurrem Sultan Hammam
The Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hammam was completed in 1556 by the great imperial architect Mimar Sinan, commissioned by Hurrem Sultan (Roxelana), wife of Suleiman the Magnificent, for the community of the neighbouring Hagia Sophia. The 75-metre building rose on the site of the ancient Baths of Zeuxippus and is regarded as one of Sinan’s classical Ottoman masterpieces, with two symmetrical sections set on a single axis. I have been to many spas around the world, but nothing compares to a traditional Turkish hamam. This was my first experience and I was thoroughly impressed. The combination of hot steam, deep exfoliation and luxurious foam treatment was like nothing I had ever tried before. The marble surfaces were warm and comforting, making me feel enveloped in relaxation. After the final oil massage, I felt reborn. My skin glowed and I had never felt so refreshed in my life – I will definitely be back!
