About Cagaloglu Hammam

Welcome to the glory of the Cagaloglu Hammam, a historical gem in the heart of the Old City of Istanbul. Dive into a world of luxury and tradition since the 18th century, where the comfort of the modern era and the culture of the Ottoman baths come together.

From the moment you arrive, you will be captivated by the authentic style of classic Turkish hospitality and Ottoman architecture surrounding you at every turn — chic marble detailing and classical Turkish motifs create a cool ambiance. Divided into two separate sections for men and women, the hammam ensures privacy and a personal experience for each guest.

The journey begins with the warm room, where the gentle heat and steam prepares your body for the traditional bathing ritual under the grand dome. The starry lights will let you feel like you are having a bath under the stars. Leading on to the hot room, with a heated marble platform and your body relaxing in a steam-filled atmosphere that opens your muscles and pores.

Professional therapists offer authentic Ottoman experiences, providing a special scrubbing head to toe with exfoliating scrubs (Kese) and massages. After a certain time at the hot room, it is time to eventually get to the cold room in order to chill out with traditional Turkish tea or sherbet.

A Brief History of Cagaloglu Hammam

Cagaloglu Hammam was completed in 1741 on the order of Sultan Mahmud I, who dedicated its earnings to the library he founded inside the Hagia Sophia. It is counted among the last major hamams built in Istanbul during the Ottoman period, and its decoration reflects the 18th-century Ottoman Baroque style. As one architectural history records, its plan “follows the long-established traditional form for hamams, though the architectural details and decoration reflect the later Ottoman Baroque style of the 18th century.” Source: Cagaloglu Hamam, historical record.

Hard water, careful if you have sensitive skin/ thin hair

First you will have to fill in the form with basic information. They will come and tell you how it will be, how many steps, then collect the payment. Ladies section is separate from men, so if you go as a group of both sex, you will have to split. You will go to your small changing room to just wear a disposable bottom(for ladies, men wear nothing), process to downstair at the sauna. There is only sauna room (other that I went to has both sauna and steaming room) and sauna room is a little more brighter than usual. It is a famous place so there will be many people around. Most worker here don’t speak English much, but they will hold your hand and take you to the big marble bed or near the faucet to wash off. Hair washing is optional, no extra charge. They won’t wash your hair as professional so if I go again, I won’t do it. The water here isn’t treated so it is extremely hard water, my hair gets frizzy and so dry after (did put condition and my own hair oil). Tip is optional. I don’t suggest go in the afternoon when all worker are tired, missing some parts, get bubbles on eyes or maybe it was just the one that work on me, they might didn’t have a good day. Remember the place is old so it can’t be compared with other newer, more modern and better tech, or water quality. I had experience with other place which is part of the hotel, the tech did a nicer work, has an extra regular bathroom if you want to wash off again. Won’t comeback to this old place but would recommend if you want to experience traditional hammam

    Great experience, highly recommend

If you’re looking for a tradition hammam experience in Istanbul, I highly recommend this. My husband and I came here during our honeymoon in Istanbul and it was an awesome experience very traditional. Men and women are separate which we anticipated but the service was great and it was clean and organized.
