Do I need to bring my own towel?

No. Every hamam listed on this site provides a peştemal and a towel as part of the entry price.

Can couples visit a hamam together?

At most hamams, men's and women's sections are separate, so couples bathe apart and meet afterwards. Şifa Hamamı in Sultanahmet is mixed-gender, so couples and families can stay in the same room throughout.

Is it normal to wear a swimsuit under the peştemal?

Yes. A swimsuit under the cloth is common and accepted everywhere, alongside underwear or nothing at all underneath.

What happens if I'd rather keep my underwear on?

That is entirely normal and no attendant will ask you to remove it. The peştemal covers you regardless of what you wear underneath.

How far in advance should I book a hamam?

A few days ahead is enough for most venues, though popular historic baths such as Cağaloğlu or Hürrem Sultan are worth booking earlier if you have a fixed date in mind.

Is the göbek taşı very hot?

It is warm rather than scalding, heated steadily to soften the skin before the scrub. Attendants adjust the time you spend on it if you find it too warm.
